Zillow Recreation – We Work, but also Know How to Have a Good Time

What can we say, Zillow employees like having fun. We certainly love to innovate and produce compelling products, but you gotta have some work-life balance and enjoy yourself. Here’s three recent “Zillow Recreation” events worth highlighting:

Paintball Excursion:

Chad Cohen, our NOT SO Boring Corporate Controller, organized a paintball trip at Eastside Paintball out in Duvall (roughly 45 minutes from Seattle). The 20 of us that attended had a blast crouching behind trees, pelting people in the face (see below), and pumping round after round into trees. I think it’s safe to say another Zillow paintball day is in the works.

This picture says it all…

Ping Pong Machine

Zillow’s CTO, David Beitel, seems to think that Zillow employees don’t play enough ping pong. Maybe that’s because we lost to Jobster . Regardless of the reason, he decided to do something about it — so now we have a Paddle Palace 989 Robot for employees to practice without dragging an opponent from their office. We’ve embedded a short video that shows the 989 Robot being put to use by John Cain.

Zillow Edge Soccer TeamBy Captain Jason TanAlthough we’re pretty serious about ping pong, we do try to enjoy the beautiful Seattle outdoors. We’ve got a co-rec soccer team, aptly named Zillow Edge, that just wrapped up a fantastic spring season. Okay, so we’re in the “D league” and are still learning Ronaldhino elasticos and Zidane headbutts. We finished the season 5-1-1 which was a big turnaround from 1-2-4 in the previous summer season. The team eeked out two wins in the round-robin playoffs to qualify for the championship game against “MIR”. And what a match-up that was, complete with a Zillow fan contingent at the game! From the first minute, it was obvious both teams brought their A-game. Passes were tight, defense was impeccable, and every shot made your heart skip a beat. We played hard, and our competition was matching us stride for stride. The end result? A 3-3 tie, but only after our star striker Nate Moch blasted a thrilling equalizer with five seconds left to answer an MIR goal scored a mere fifty-five seconds earlier. The boy’s got a golden leg crafted by Mercury himself, I tell ya. Unfortunately, our league rules allow championship game ties, and with that, MIR were technically the league champions. We happily took home the silver medal. Summer season just kicked off and we’re gunning for first this time. Go Zillow Edge!
